The word diet is usually viewed as synonymous with the word limitations. You can make a gorgeous, creamy risotto in your slow cooker in about an hour. Other crockpot recipes with rice include jambalaya and rice pudding. You can add cooked rice to any slow cooker hole chicken in the final stages of cooking and it is especially good to bulk up a soup or stew dish.

A few companies now make a cooker with it's own carry bag with handles, etc. to take along to family gatherings and picnics. A way around this if yours isn't this fancy, just find a sturdy cardboard box, line it with a plastic bag and some newspaper for additional padding and then add your slow cooker. Be sure to hold at the bottom while transporting so it doesn't spill. Once you get back home you can just keep that box for your next cooking adventure.

Since we're doing true confessions in this column already, I'm going to go ahead and admit the slow cooker whole chicken paprika egg rolls were my favourite dish of the night, and why. I love Chili's southwestern egg rolls. They are one of my favourite chain-restaurant menu items anywhere. Tango's version are what Chili's want to be when they grow up, creamier and more subtly-flavoured. They're sided with the same chipotle aioli as the yam fries we tried, which are a solid, mid-thickness, mid-crispness fry.

Skip the heavy, greasy fry-up or conversely, never leave home on an empty stomach. Aim for a low-calorie, high-protein breakfast such as a whole-egg omelette with ham, cheese & tomato, or banana on wholemeal toast with ricotta and sugar-free maple syrup. Less than 400 calories, these two breakfast examples are tasty and simple to prepare.

If not, why not invest in a slow cooker or even a "smart pot", so you can make some easy slow cooker recipes to impress your family?

In an effort to keep the bill down, the husband and the child both split a brownie, and I order a blueberry cheesecake. The brownie is (without a doubt) large enough for two people to share, in fact it is large enough that I end up with a quarter of the brownie to sample.
